Diana quits Great British Bake Off, Iain speaks out about 'bingate'
BBC BBC
GREAT BRITISH BAKE Off’s Diana Beard has quit the show due to illness – just after becoming embroiled in the show’s biggest controversy to date.
In Wednesday night’s episode, contestant Iain Watters was booted out after his baked Alaska was removed from the freezer (and completely ruined) by fellow baker Diana.
No one was happy.
The Telegraph reports that the BBC received over 556 complaints from angry viewers that thought Iain shouldn’t have been kicked off the show.
The hashtag #JusticeForIain sprung up in support of Watters, and fans nicknamed Beard ‘Dirty Diana’. The incident in question was dubbed ‘bingate’.
Beard spoke with her local radio station, saying she believed she had been “stitched up” by the show’s producers.
This evening, the BBC released a statement from Iain on Twitter – he said he doesn’t “hold Diana responsible in any way” for the mishap, and there are “no grudges” between the two of them.
The broadcaster also confirmed that Diana had left the show due to illness ahead of the filming of episode five:
That’s that then.
Presenter Sue Perkins had this to say, which pretty much sums it all up.
